CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Many Chicago softball leagues that typically play at Grant Park are striking out thanks to a number of big-ticket events coming to town this summer.
“It’s an awesome spot for people to go and enjoy softball in one of the most iconic places to play softball in the world, in my opinion,” said Chris Hastings, President of the Chicago Sport and Social Club.
Hastings said for the first time since the early 90’s, they won’t be playing ball at Grant Park this summer.
“When it comes to events in the parks, that’s something that we recognize is important,” he said. “Certainly, when there are events that bring in tourism dollars and elevate the city, we understand that’s a big piece of what needs to happen. We would just like softball to be able to remain a part of Grant Park in the future,” added Hastings.
With NASCAR and several major music festivals taking over the park this summer, Hastings said the Chicago Park District has been helpful in trying to find new places for teams to play.
“We’re looking forward to a great softball season. Demand is at an all-time high for the sport. We’ll have enough for those that want to play and hopefully in the future, we’ll be back at Grant Park.”
