CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Cook County Forest Preserve system has added new land to one of its highest quality nature preserves in the northwest suburbs.

The city of Elgin has given the Forest Preserve District of Cook County more than 20 acres of land connected to the county’s Bluff Spring Fen to preserve and protect the uniqueness of the fen, which is a rare type of wetland. That’s nearly 893,000 square feet of land.

Forest Preserve District spokesman Carl Vogel said the now 180 acre fen is special.

They’ve counted more than 450 kinds of plants, 57 butterflies, more than 27 just dragonfly species and over 100 migratory and nesting birds in the preserve, in this one preserve,” Vogel said.

The donated land is on the south end of the Bluff City Cemetery.

The idea for the donation came from a volunteer who works to preserve the land.
