CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The city of Chicago is suing a gun shop in Northwest Indiana for allegedly selling guns that often end up in the hands of criminals.

Westforth Sports in Gary - a decades-old family business — is the defendant.

Chicago’s lawsuit says the shop has sold hundreds of guns channeled through straw purchases, with guns ending up with felons.

Mayor Lightfoot was asked to comment on the lawsuit Monday.

“The data is fairly compelling against that particular gun store,” she said.

“They are selling thousands of crime guns every year. And the time for us to stop to ask them to do better and make sure they’re not selling to straw purchasers — do what they’re required to do as a federally licensed gun dealer — is over.

“We tried that. It hasn’t worked. So, now we’re in litigation with them.”

The city’s lawsuit asks for a court order that Westforth Guns stop taking part in gun trafficking.

There has been no comment from the Indiana gun store.
