CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Teachers Union held a rally Saturday in opposition to legislation banning critical race theory and other culturally responsive curriculums.
It's part of a national response from educators across America. CTU members said they want to teach honest history to their students, to bring light to social issues like racism, sexism and climate change.
The CTU said lawmakers in at least 28 states are attempting to pass legislation banning critical race theory and other curriculums that touch on the history of oppression in America. Chicago Public Schools will start its school year on Monday.
The rally was held just north of 31st Street Beach. A boulder along the lakefront trail marks the spot where the Race Riot of 1919 began. Eugene Williams, a Black 17-year-old boy, drowned after a white man threw stones at him for crossing the invisible segregation line. Thirty eight people died and over 500 were injured during the riot.
Chicago's Race Riot of 1919 is an example of history that the CTU wants to include in culturally responsive curriculums. Educators in the CTU said they want to teach honest history to their students, so they can connect the dots to today's issues.
