Long planned rail routes, including one connecting Chicago to Rockford, could be possible under Biden's infrastructure bill

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Rail riders in Chicago would have more places to go under the massive infrastructure bill proposed by the Biden Administration.

The White House proposal includes $80 billion for Amtrak - a windfall of money that would allow the railroad to tackle projects that had long been on the drawing board.

The route map released Wednesday by Amtrak includes enhanced service out of Chicago to destinations across the Midwest.

A train between Chicago and Rockford would be on the Amtrak schedule for the first time since the Black Hawk was discontinued in 1981. A revival of the Rockford route has been in the works in recent years, and the project to bring the line back to passenger train standards has received funding from the State of Illinois.

The route proposal also includes a second train between Chicago, Milwaukee, and the Twin Cities.
