CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The warm weather has returned to Chicago, but visiting tourists have not.

One local tour guide says 2021 may be a good year for Chicagoans to check out their own city.

Kevin Doerksen of Wild Onion Walks has been a professional tour guide for nearly 20 years.

He said in spring 2019, he had about 400 customers between March and Memorial Day. He’s used to ushering 2,000 to 3,000 people during the summer months.

In 2020, he had six customers.

This year is not looking so great, either, with maybe a dozen tours set up. Now, Doerksen said he’s shifting gears and encouraging Chicagoans to think about exploring their city, which features 77 separate communities.

“Get out explore the neighborhoods of Chicago,” he said. “There is amazing stuff to see, both historic and contemporary, in each of these neighborhoods.”
