CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Besides races for mayor and alderman in Chicago today, voters are choosing members of the new Police District Councils.
The new Police District Councils will be designed to oversee police accountability in Chicago. Each of the city’s 22 police districts will have three council members who live in those districts. They’ll meet once a month and provide neighborhood feedback to police and work with police to solve problems and set priorities.
“ Please note, for these Police District Council races, there will be no run-off. The decisions will be made today by the voters,” Chicago Board of Election Chair Marisel Hernandez said.
Each police district council will also nominate the seven people who will make up a seven-person, citywide commission that will play a role in selecting and removing police superintendents and chief administrators for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
