CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Political leaders, military officers and many veterans gathered at Soldier Field Thursday for the city's annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Veterans of each branch of the U.S. armed forces were honored for their service as well as those who gave their lives serving their country.

Brig. Gen. Patricia Wallace of the Army Reserve said many veterans have given their lives in another way by choosing public service after they leave the military.

"Many of our first responders are veterans who are not short on experiences, knowledge and abilities that contributed to the communities in which we work," she said.

Wallace also thanked the families of veterans and those currently in the military. She said that just as those who have served their country are honored, it's important to remember the sacrifices and support of their families.
