CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A community meeting is planned tonight over the City’s intention to open a new shelter for migrants on the South Side.

Fifth Ward Alderman Desmon Yancy said the Lake Shore Hotel in the Kenwood neighborhood is expected to be used as a shelter starting as early as next week. The hotel is on 49th and DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

The alderman said it could house 300 people. The meeting is at The Promontory, located at 53rd and Lake Park Avenue, at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the City is also looking to turn the former Marine Corps facility on Foster Avenue into a shelter. That would house about 550 people. The full City Council is expected to vote next month on that proposed purchase.

Since last August, Texas has bused to Chicago more than 13,000 asylum-seeking migrants. There are currently about 1,500 migrants being sheltered in Chicago police stations.
