CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The holiday travel period kicks off Wednesday and the city is gearing up at O’Hare and Midway Airports.

The city expects more people to travel through O’Hare and Midway Airports than the last Christmas/New Year period. The Chicago Aviation Department expects 2.9 million travelers to pass through the airports between Wednesday and January 2. The busiest travel day at O’Hare is pegged to be Thursday.

At Midway, it will be December 27. Karen Pride of the Aviation Department said both airports have 350 pieces of equipment total and plenty of runway de-icer to deal with the projected snowy weather.

"We’re in full winter mode right now," she said. "I remember a couple of years ago. You might remember, too. It snowed on Halloween, so we have to be ready for whatever conditions may come."

Elizabeth Pluth is headed to Alaska and is beating the bad weather here.

"I heard that and I was very glad I was leaving today."

Officials ask you to get to the airport at least two hours before your flight to make sure you get through security smoothly.
