CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Chicago Federation of Labor have reached a deal on Saturday to avert layoffs in the city’s budget for next year.
The deal came after the CFL offered up to $272 million in cost-cutting options to the city.
A statement released by mayor’s office said the deal also ensures Chicago city workers will remain on the job as Chicago deals with the pandemic.
The two sides will continue to work together to find other ways to cut costs and help preserve city jobs.
CLF tapped labor-oriented think tank Public Works to find alternatives to the mayor’s expectation that she’d have to layoff some 350 employees to balance the budget.
Lightfoot presented the nearly $13-billion 2021 budget plan to the Chicago City Council on Oct. 21.
