(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Friday said her administration is trying a new approach to keep the city safe during the summer.
After last year’s summer of violence and unrest — which Lightfoot says every city experienced — this year she says she’s bringing a different focus.
The city has identified the police department’s 15 “most violent beats.” Those beats, on the South and West sides, have accounted for half the violence in the city of Chicago.
Lightfoot said there will be a team response to violence, not just with police. The library system and the park district will be bringing in services.
A reporter challenged the mayor and suggested she was promising “the safest summer in Chicago.”
“What our goal is, is to make this summer safe. Can I sit here and promise you that that’s what’s going to happen at the end of the summer?
“No, of course not. And you know that.”
The mayor acknowledge not all the drivers of violence will take advantage of the extra services she plans to offer.
“Some will, some won’t,” she said.
