Another tradition has changed in the age of COVID-19.

Typically, couples would line up outside the government offices in Daley Plaza hours before the doors open to ensure they would get Cook County’s first marriage license of the year.

In an effort to keep everyone safe, Clerk Karen Yarbrough held a virtual lottery because, as she said, COVID has thrown a monkey wrench into the usual plans.

After one of her employees drew from a fishbowl with the names of 55 couples, the clerk announced during a Facebook live that she’s looking forward to performing the ceremony for Andrea Harris and Dwight Carter.

The wedding will be held on Jan. 4 on Zoom — another first for the office.

The happy couple will receive gifts of food, wine, flowers and other wedding-day presents donated to the office.
