(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council has approved millions of dollars in tax assistance to bring new life to the long-dormant Congress Theater in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Aldermen approved $27 million in Tax Increment Financing to be used as part of an $88 million plan to renovate the Congress Theater in the 2100 block of North Milwaukee.

The 4,900-seat theater is nearly 100 years but was closed 10 years ago because of building code violations.

When complete, the project calls for a restored auditorium, ground-floor space that will be available for non-profits and community groups at below-market rates, plus affordable apartments on the two upper floors.

The project is expected to result in 125 permanent jobs.
