(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – DuPage County authorities say there has been another dangerous, high-speed pursuit in their region – this time by a man on probation who allegedly used a stolen vehicle to get to a meeting with his probation officer.
The incident unfolded 3:20 p.m. Thursday when a Villa Park police officer observed a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Chicago, the DuPage County State’s Attorney said in a news release. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly made an illegal U-turn on Roosevelt Road and entered I-290 and drove at speeds of more than 107 miles per hour.
The Villa Park police officer ended the pursuit, and a Chicago police helicopter tracked the rogue vehicle, officials said. The driver reportedly exited the expressway, crashed into a parked car in Cicero and then fled the scene on foot, attempting to blend in with crowd of elementary school students being released for the day.
Cicero police took a suspect – 25-year-old Deshun Williams of Downers Grove – into custody. Investigators determined that Williams was driving a vehicle that had been stolen from a GrubHub driver the day before, prosecutors said.
Williams is on probation for a stolen vehicle offense. Authorities believe Williams used the stolen vehicle he was driving Thursday to meet with his probation officer earlier in the day.
A judge set Williams’ bail at $250,000 after he was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding and driving with a revoked license. He’s next due in court on May 28.
“In this month alone, my office has filed charges against twelve motorists charged with fleeing from police,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “This epidemic needs to stop and it needs to stop now, before someone gets killed.”
