(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Cook County Treasurer’s property tax sale starts today.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas says that of the more than 37,000 properties in which property taxes were not paid last year, more than half are for less than $1,000 in back taxes.
She says more than $175 million in unpaid property taxes are overdue. They include homes, businesses and vacant land, nearly 18,000 properties in the city, more than 19,000 properties in the suburbs.
If property taxes go unpaid for more than two and a half years the property owners could lose their property. The tax sale runs for a week.
