The Cook County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a new phone scam.
The scam involves someone who identifies themselves as a Sheriff's Office employee and tells the victim they've missed jury duty or have outstanding citations and must pay to clear everything up. The caller says if the victim sends money to an email address through the money transfer app Zelle, a judge can be assigned to their case.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says his office never makes such phone calls and as anyone who may have received one to contact his office.
