(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Low-income Cook County residents next month can start applying for the new guaranteed income pilot program that one county commissioner suggests is like winning the lottery, but smaller.
Chicago has a guaranteed income pilot program underway, so does Evanston. But, Cook County Economic Development Chief Xochitl Flores outlined what will be the largest publicly-funded one.
“(It) will provide $500 monthly payments to 3,250 Cook County households over the course of two years,” Flores said.
From October 6th through the 21st eligible residents can apply for the so-called Cook County Promise pilot program.
County Board President Toni Preckwinkle would like to see a life-changing program like this become permanent but she acknowledged a third of county residents are eligible.
“I don’t think the county envisions having a program that would be able to cover all the people that are eligible. What we hope to do is prove the concept or help prove the concept…The Federal government is going to have to do this,” Preckwinkle said.
She said a national problem needs a national solution.
