(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago police vehicle collided with a car driven by a 17-year-old boy Friday afternoon on the West Side, seriously injuring a police officer.

Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern says the crash happened at Madison Avenue and Central Park as the officer was heading westbound responding to an incident.

Ahern says the officer had his siren and emergency lights on while crossing Central Park Avenue. The southbound teen drove a sedan through the intersection.

The driver — who was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, no driver’s license and operating an uninsured vehicle — was in good condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

The officer sustained blunt trauma to the head and was in serious condition, Ahern said.

An investigation continues.
