CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADI0) -- Video and audio has been made public of an exchange of gunfire on Christmas Eve between an alleged car thief and an off-duty Chicago police officer on the Near West Side.
The off-duty officer was at a gas station at Ashland and Roosevelt. The hood to his SUV was up and he was talking to a gas station attendant when someone jumped into his car and began driving away with the hood up.
Video made public by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability shows the vehicle hit a fire hydrant and a tree before the thief started shooting at the officer, who returned fire.
No one was hit during the exchange of gunfire.
A witness told a 911 dispatcher, "They stole somebody’s car and they left but I heard some gun sounds in the back alley."
Police caught up with the suspect a short time later and arrested him.
