(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Hooved Animal Humane Society has settled on a name for a famous cow, which came into their care after students in Niles set her loose during a senior prank.

In a Facebook post, the Woodstock-based organization said her name is now Blossom. They added that the name was fitting, as “she is truly blossoming before our eyes every day.”

Blossom captured the attention of thousands after a video — shot by WBBM’s Roger Plummer on the morning of April 27 — showed Blossom galloping down a sidewalk with a group of teenagers chasing behind.

“Twelve kids are running after the cow,” Plummer said. “I yelled out, ‘Why is the cow running down the street?’ as if I’m going to get a good answer, and one kid pulled over in his car and said: ‘Sorry sir, stuff like this sometimes happens.’ Then he sped away.”

Plummer said he had just returned home from his shift when he looked up and saw the cow running past his parked van.

The next day, Hooved Animal Humane Society welcomed Blossom to their facility. Cynthia Glensgard, the program’s executive director, said the staff is in love with Blossom. She added that the cow was making friends with horses on the other side of her fence.

Blossom was chosen as her name following a contest that was part of a fundraiser. According to the organizations’ Facebook, the fundraiser drew $815 for the Hooved Animal Humane Society.

Aside from Blossom, other suggested names included Footloose and Moodini — a riff on the famous escape artist Harry Houdini.
