CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation said its leaders have visited the family of slain Chicago Police Officer Andrés Mauricio Vásquez Lasso to pledge the foundation's support.

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation and its director — former Police Superintendent Phil Cline —- said in a statement:

"To see an enthusiastic, optimistic young man embarking on a rewarding career in public service gunned down in broad daylight by a gun-wielding offender fleeing the police is an assault on all the things we value as a community," Cline said.

Officials announced in the statement that the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s Gold Star Families have "reached out to [Vásquez Lasso's] family to join them in grieving and to pledge ongoing emotional support."

"Foundation officials also provided Officer Vásquez Lasso’s wife with an $80,000 check to help with any needed expenses as they grieve their loss."

The Chicago Police Department’s 22nd District will host a prayer vigil for Vásquez Lasso Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
