(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Police Department is reaching out to members of the gay community with new liaisons.
At the Center on Halsted, CEO Modesto Tico Valle welcomed the liaisons, who are working within the police department’s Civil Rights Unit.
Police Supt. David Brown calls the new liaisons a small step in changing the culture of the police department.
It comes at a time when organizers of gay pride parades in other major cities are uninviting police to march.
"We don't want that to happen here," Brown said.
The liaisons will also provide peer support to LGBTQ officers in the department.
