CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago police officer shot an armed teenager early Sunday morning in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, and it was caught on camera.
It happened near 72nd Street and South Artesian Avenue. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) said it received video footage of the incident, which was captured by an officer’s body-worn camera.
The police oversight agency also laid out what led up to the shooting. It said a group of people in an alley started running away from three officers who approached them.
One officer noticed a teen holding a firearm and shot them.
Police said two guns were recovered from the scene.
Following the shooting, a male teenage victim was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said. He is in stable condition, Merritt said.
Police did not release the person’s age. Merritt did not have the child’s exact age but said he was 15 years old or younger. He was taken to a pediatric trauma center.
An officer was taken to a hospital for observation and was in good condition, police said.
The officer who fired shots will be put on administrative duties for 30 days, per department policy, police said.
