CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago Police are providing more information about a mass shooting that took place on the Near North Side Thursday night, leaving two people dead and seven others wounded.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said the shooting of nine people started with an argument between two groups. He said a roving police patrol saw the disturbance and went to break it up.
“Our office tried to wade their way out of the crowd. We see on video, where a person with a gun fires into the crowd,” Brown said.
Superintendent Brown said the gunman and the group he was with ran a few feet and down the stairs into the CTA Red Line subway station at Chicago Avenue, but police were right behind him and arrested him and confiscated what they believe was the gun involved.
Outside the McDonalds, where this all started, has been a troublesome spot for decades.
“We will go in, check out the licensing of the McDonalds. We’ll work with the Department of Buildings and just see if there’s anything that we can hold the business accountable too,” said Ken Meyer, Chicago Business and Consumer Protection Commissioner.
Superintendent Brown said a woman who ran down to the subway station, fell onto the tracks during the chaos. The Fire Department said she suffered burns from the third rail.
