CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Among the many challenges facing the Chicago Police Department? Staffing issues. But the city’s top cop is preaching positivity.

Police Superintendent David Brown admitted the job is not for the faint of heart.

“I’ve been a cop since 1983,” Brown told reporters Tuesday. “There’s no other time these past 40 years where policing has been more difficult.”

And he said like many other police departments in the country, that’s contributing to staffing shortages.

“We need as many officers on the street as possible to protect not only the residents, but to protect the officers who do come to work.”

A big issue has been the cancellation of days off for officers, which Brown said CPD only does when absolutely necessary. He’s hoping the addition of 100 new recruits this week will help.

“We could always use more officers,” Brown said.
