CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Public Schools system is buying tens of thousands of new laptops for the anticipation of a likely surge in COVID cases.
Chicago Public Schools administrators expect entire classes and even entire schools to have to go on quarantine and learn remotely from home with next month’s expected continued surge in COVID cases. As a result, according to the Sun-Times, CPS is investing in 100,000 new laptops.
Although CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said he has no intention of a full-scale, systemwide return to remote learning; principals were reportedly told at a meeting this month to prepare for a “doomsday” scenario in which thousands of students are quarantined and required to do remote learning.

Another reason for a need for more laptops, according to school officials is that some laptops were lost or not returned by students, although officials did not say how many that included.
