CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools is expected to make an announcement Tuesday regarding its COVID-19 quarantine procedures.
The district hopes to bring down the number of students who have been forced to isolate at home.
According to the latest CPS data, more than 6,000 students are quarantined after 1,200 students and staff tested positive for COVID-19.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the district’s policy should be updated, because "over-quarantining creates chaos."
We have to be very clear with protocols. We have to not put that burden on building principals; that's not fair to them. And we have to be very transparent with parents," Lightfoot said.
Mayor Lightfoot, CPS CEO Pedro Martinez, and other CPS leaders said Monday that they have been consulting with the Chicago Department of Public Health to look at quarantining procedures and want to be more in line with CDC guidelines.
"I asked Dr. Arwady and her team to get directly involved so CPS has a benefit to the most up-to-date learning from the CDC and the department of public health; and that we are giving very clear protocols and guidance to everyone in the system as to what has to happen for mitigation and safety within the schools," Lightfoot said.
Martinez added: "It's now time to make sure we are aligned with current guidance from CDC."
The Chicago Teachers Union previously said the number of students out of school has drastically interfered with instructional programming throughout the city.
