CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago police have issued an alert to businesses on North Michigan Avenue and the Gold Coast following a series of robberies. Police believe it was the same crew.
In one incident, on Saturday afternoon, a robbery crew - a group of masked men - entered a store on the 600 block of North Michigan Avenue, grabbed designer handbags from display tables valued at about $40,000, and knocked down an "elderly" security guard before running outside into a waiting car.
Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said they put the "elderly" security guard in the hospital.
"That individual is expected to survive, but does have a skull fracture and is in extremely serious condition, still in the ICU. We don't know what the long-term effects are going to be of this injury," he said.
Deenihan added that the security guard has bleeding in his brain.
He said police are certain that people know who committed this crime and once again, "we need your help in this investigation." He noted that the suspects were not only “running in and stealing purses, but in this case, causing extremely serious harm and putting an elderly security guard in the ICU.”
He went on to say "these individuals fled in a stolen car. We know that for certain and we do have some video on this incident. But these offenders we obviously wearing masks and hoodies."
Police believe the same crew committed at least three other similar crimes.
In addition to Saturday’s robbery, police believe the group was involved in similar robberies in the 900 block of North Rush Street on Aug. 15, and another pair of robberies the next day at a store in the 100 block of East Huron Street and at a business in the 900 block of North Michigan Avenue.
Police believe four to seven men are apart of the robbery crew.
