(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Police in west suburban Berwyn say they are anticipating a potential “large gathering” in their area Saturday, one that could devolve into the type of violent disturbance experienced in Chicago last weekend.

Berwyn police made the announcement Wednesday, citing “credible intelligence” the gathering could occur around North Riverside Park Mall in neighboring North Riverside in the afternoon and evening.

“This gathering, much like what was reported on in the City of Chicago last weekend, has the potential for public disturbances and acts of violence,” the Berwyn Police Department said.

The department was in contact with North Riverside and other communities to strategize over how police might respond, officials said.

“We will be working to swiftly disperse participants, and ask you to avoid this area if at all possible,” Berwyn police said.

Violence erupted as large groups of young people converged in downtown Chicago last Saturday. Police appeared caught off-guard but vowed that unruly behavior will not be tolerated.
