CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Chicago Transit Authority is sharing a portion of the $30 billion that the federal government is passing on to public transit agencies hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CTA’s share is just over $912 million from the American Rescue Plan, funds that a spokesperson for the transit agency said are “critical” to retain workers and continue service.

“Since the onset of the pandemic, the CTA has continued to run 24/7, and is the only large U.S. transit agency to not cut scheduled service,” Felicia Matthews said.

Ridership has rebounded from 2020 levels but overall it remains around 50% of where it was in 2019, with more in some areas and less in others.

Stations and routes serving predominantly minority communities retained more riders over the past two years than those in mostly white and more affluent areas.
