CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Activists were chanting “no more jokes” outside of CTA headquarters at Lake and Jefferson Streets Wednesday.

They said that’s what the CTA has become: A joke.

Prior to the transit agency’s monthly board meeting, those present were criticizing the CTA’s inaccurate and unreliable schedules and trackers, as well as long wait times.

“We are here today to demand better service, faster, reliable, on-time schedules — because that’s what safety looks like,” said Jose Manuel. “Safety does not look like having more police in buses or trains. Safety does not look like not having attack dogs on our buses and our trains.”

Manuel told the crowd: “Safety looks like knowing exactly when the bus will arrive … not waiting an hour-and-a-half for the bus to come.”

Several questioned why CTA President Dorval Carter got a 33% raise to $350,000.

Kyle Lewis, with a group called Better Streets Chicago, said Chicago residents deserve a better CTA.

“It’s very clear that the CTA’s Meeting the Moment plan is missing the mark, and it’s time for the president of the CTA and the mayor to stop shirking their duty to provide consistent, reliable transit service to our city,” said Lewis.
