CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Transit Authority on Thursday unveiled slick new redevelopment designs for four train stations on the city’s northern edge.
The overhauls of the Red Line stations — Argyle, Berwyn, Bryn Mawr and Lawrence — are part of a $2.1 billion project known as the Red and Purple Modernization Phase One. It’s billed as the largest transit investment in CTA history.

Each rebuilt station will include elevators and escalators, wider platforms and amenities designed to better serve the more than 4 million customers who pass through annually. They are in the Uptown and Edgewater neighborhoods.
The Red Line is CTA’s busiest line, carrying nearly 70 million riders in 2019, the CTA said.

"Public transit is the great connector of our city and with this monumental project, we are building on our obligation to ensure Chicago’s transportation network is accessible, reliable and affordable so our residents remain connected to jobs, education and opportunity,” Mayor Lightfoot said in a prepared statement.
Staggered station closures and construction is expected to begin this spring, officials said.
