CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Members of the Chicago Teacher’s Union and some Aldermen are demanding more from the school district to help migrant students.

They stood outside CPS headquarters in the Loop saying migrants don’t have support with, among other things, bi-lingual programs, special education and counseling.

They’re demanding that all Charter Schools do their part and enroll migrant students and that all adopt the same sanctuary language that’s been adopted in the other schools.

Alderwoman of the 33rd Ward Rossana Rodriguez was among them.

"Chicago is a Sanctuary City," she said.

"We have fought like hell so that people feel protected, so that immigrants feel protected and it is insane to me that we have several charter schools that are refusing to incorporate language to protect undocumented children and families. This doesn't cost anything."

CTU Vice President Jackson Potter said, "imagine if you're an immigrant family and you're young people and you don't have home and you don't have services and you don't have bilingual support in your school and you don't have protection from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and that's all these educators are asking."

The union members were very critical of Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Potter said "she’s hoarding a billion dollars."

The CTU is backing Brandon Johnson for mayor and the union is in contract negotiations with the Charter Schools.
