(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Teachers Union is trying to drum up opposition to plans by Chicago Public Schools to begin a return to classrooms next week.
The teachers union led a webinar Wednesday with school nurses as the keynote speakers.
“We wish it was safe to be in buildings, but right now it is not,” Dennis Kosuth, a school nurse in the Rogers Park neighborhood, said.
Maria Moreno, the CTU’s financial secretary, said the time isn’t right for school buildings to be filled.
“The end of this pandemic is coming. The vaccines are coming out. What is the rush to do this?”
CPS has said it is taking safety seriously.
“Health and safety are the district’s highest priorities and accommodations for remote work have been granted to all teachers and staff who have documented medical conditions,” CPS said in a statement.
