(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A top leader of the Chicago Teachers Union — one who’s rarely on the same page as the mayor and Chicago Public Schools administrators — says their mutual agreement on face masks is “the moment people have been waiting for.”

Suburban school districts are all over the map after a downstate judge temporarily stopped enforcement of the governor’s indoor mask mandate.

But an agreement in Chicago between CPS CEO Pedro Martinez and the CTU means masks will still be required in the city’s public schools.

“We are willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with Mayor Lightfoot and Pedro against those who really are harming our school communities,” CTU Vice President Stacy Davis Gates said Monday.

Davis Gates is a potential successor to CTU President Jesse Sharkey, who is not running for re-election.

Both have been at the forefront of CTU’s public battles with the Lightfoot Administration over a variety of issues, including COVID safeguards at CPS school buildings.
