CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The unexplained death of a 24-year-old Antioch man who walked away from a car crash and was found dead in the Des Plaines River three weeks later remains under investigation while his family is grateful his body was found.
The autopsy on the body of Tommy Howe showed signs consistent with drowning.
That’s preliminary.
Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton told the Daily Herald Howe's body had been in the water for an extended period of time. Though there were no significant injuries more testing is being done.
Howe was seen walking across Interstate 94 following the crash near Libertyville toward a forest preserve.
His body would be found a considerable distance away after a kayaker spotted a jacket on shore.
There were numerous agencies and volunteers involved in the three-week search effort.
To them, the family wrote, “We are incredibly humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and selfless acts. While the outcome was not what we were hoping and praying for, we were able to locate Tommy, and now have the honor to lay him to rest.”
