Democrats slam Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin for running for Governor of Illinois as a Republican

AURORA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois Democrats have wasted no time in slamming Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin’s entry into the race for governor as a Republican.

Kane County Democrats were lining up against Richard Irvin’s candidacy even before his announcement. Casey Cuevas, who’s on Aurora’s Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board, said he’s always appreciated Governor Pritzker’s support and commitment to his people. He remembers what Aurora was like when Republican Bruce Rauner was governor.

The Democratic Governors Association produced a video showing several times when Richard Irvin praised JB Pritzker, too.

"It is my honor to bring to the podium a great friend, a great leader, who has guided our state with professionalism and compassion throughout this entire pandemic," Irvin said in the video.

Some Democrats suggested Irvin is compromising his values for backing from Republican Billionaire Griffin. While Griffin did have good things to say about Mayor Richard Irvin, he did not say he supports him yet.

Meanwhile, some of Richard Irvin’s apparent Republican Primary rivals tried to both welcome and throw cold water on the Aurora Mayor’s campaign.

Businessman Gary Rabine said he welcomes Irvin to the race and the Republican Party, noting that Irvin pulled Democratic Primary ballots when Pat Quinn, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden were at the top of the tickets.

Political newcomer and venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan, another declared candidate, said people are tired of career politicians who’ve already had opportunities to fix our state. Still, he said, as an athlete he welcomes competition, even for elected office.
