(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- DePaul University students are slated to move into campus housing next week ahead of the new school year, and some will be bringing support animals.
In the seven years Gregory Moorehead has been director of DePaul’s Center for Students with Disabilities, he said he’s seen a significant jump in the number of students asking to bring emotional support animals.
“We’ve seen requests for ferrets, we’ve seen requests for turtles, we’ve seen requests for rabbits,” he tells WBBM Newsradio.
There have also been cats, which can cause a problem for roommates or suitemates, depending on allergies.
This year, Moorehead said students have registered 55 emotional support animals -- or assistance animals, as DePaul refers to them -- and service animals. The latter animals are limited to dogs or miniature horses that are trained to perform tasks for their humans and accompany them to class.
