(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dinkel’s Bakery — in business in Chicago for 99 years and in the same building for the past 95 years — is now trying to sell its property.
The 77-year-old president of the company says the family is not selling the bakery, WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller reports.
Norm Dinkel says the bakery on North Lincoln Avenue in Lakeview is part of the community. But he says the bakery maybe needs a new location with a drive-through.
“The other option is: Our internet business has grown so dramatically, that maybe we find a small plant someplace and just continue on,” he said Thursday.
Dinkel says the bakery business has changed in 99 years.
“My dad told me in 1922 there were 7,000 retail bakeries in Chicago. People would shop at a bakery three times a day,” he said.
Dinkel says by putting the building on the market and considering options for the future of the bakery, he’s trying to be proactive.
“I’m not getting younger. Except I’d like to go down to St. Augustine (Florida) today and find the Fountain of Youth. And get out of this snow while I get younger.”
