CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Hundreds of small business owners in Little Village gained some breathing room after an agreement was made with the new owner of the Discount Mall for a short term lease extension.
“This gives us time and peace of mind, so you have a little time,” Little Village Community Council President Baltazar Enriquez said.
He shared the news with Discount Mall vendors after recent meetings with them, lease holders, and Novak Construction, the new owners of the property.
Novak bought the building on 26th Street in 2020 and the belief is that the Discount Mall will be demolished and a Target will be built on the land. But community activist Kristian Armendariz, outside the Discount Mall, said there are already enough Targets.
"There is a Target in Cicero. We already have another one on Archer and Damen, on 44th and Pulaski. We don’t need another one in Little Village,” said Armendariz.
25th Ward Alderman Byron-Sigcho Lopez said that, with this formal extension for vendors to stay operating until the end of January, his office will continue working to ensure vendors can stay permanently.
