CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago police discovered the dismembered remains of a woman’s body in a freezer inside of a West Ridge boarding house Monday night.

Chief of Detectives Brian Deenihan said the woman — who has not yet been identified but is believed to be the 55-year-old owner of the building — was reported missing by a tenant around 7 p.m. Monday.

Deenihan said the resident who made the report pointed investigators toward an eventual suspect: a neighbor who frightened other residents in the building. They said the person “had recently called a tow truck” to haul off “a heavy bag.”

That bag was discovered by police in a garbage can at Foster Beach. It was filled with bloody towels.

"Based upon that evidence, the detectives were able to go into the residence, and they eventually discovered human remains in a freezer," Deenihan said.

Meanwhile, the tow truck driver reached out to police and provided his location, Deenihan said, after the suspect allegedly pulled a knife on the driver.

“Officers responded to that scene, placed that suspect into custody, [and] transported that individual back to Area Three Detective division for that original [aggravated] assault with a knife,” he said. “Once at Area Three, that suspect invoked the right to remain silent regarding the other homicide investigation.”

The garbage can from Foster Beach, as well as its contents, have been taken to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation, Deenihan said.

“We have a long way to go, but obviously we believe that the missing person is … unfortunately the individual we discovered,” Deenihan said.
