CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of the union representing teachers in Dolton, Harvey and South Holland covering High School District 205 is demanding that teachers have more input in planning as the schools have been experiencing “unprecedented” violence.

There have been violent incidents between students and between students and staff in the classrooms yet teachers’ voices are not being heard.

"Our members are frustrated, scared, and in some cases extremely angry," Union president Dwayne Bearden said. "We have teachers who have worked over 20 years within our school districts and they never experienced the type of violence they're experiencing today."

He wants to see a collaboration between teachers, administrators, students and police.

District 205's Superintendent, Nathaniel Cunningham Jr., told the Daily Southtown, like other schools are seeing, “the violence is extreme.”

He said they’re “doing the best (they) can to keep people safe.”
