CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Secretary of State Jesse White has announced in- person closures of his departments including driver services beginning Jan. 3.
Driver services and other Secretary of State departments will move online for a two-week period to start off the new year as COVID cases climb in Illinois and will reopen on Jan. 18.
“After careful consideration and out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to close all Driver Services facilities beginning Jan. 3, 2022, through Jan. 17, 2022, due to the spike in COVID-19 cases,” said White in a statement.
“The health and safety of employees and the public remains paramount, and face-to-face transactions potentially increase the further spread of the virus. Our goal is to safely reopen all offices and driver services facilities on January 18 for face-to-face transactions.”
Secretary of State Spokesperson David Drucker told WBBM that many services can still be done online such as renewal of driver's registration, obtaining a duplicate driver's license, and obtaining driver's record.
He also said that some business services documents can also still be filed online through the Illinois Secretary of State website and that the option remains open to make any appropriate changes to an earlier announced drivers license renewal deadline.
