(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Police in south suburban Oak Forest arrested a man from downstate Illinois on Sunday after an armed standoff.

Oak Forest police said officers responded to the BP gas station shortly before 11 a.m. after reports came in about a man, armed with a gun, who was threatening to harm people.

When officers told the man to show them his hands, he allegedly replied: “I’m going to shoot you.”

The man then drew his firearm, which police said he brandished as officers continued to try and de-escalate the situation. Eventually, the man got back into his gray Kia and fled west on 159th Street.

Oak Forest police said officers followed the man and managed to stop him with the assistance of other agencies at 151st Street and Oak Park Avenue. Officers tried again to try and get the man to surrender peacefully, but officials said he got out of his vehicle and removed a “large-breed dog” from his back seat. The man continued to approach officers.

“Do it; shoot me,” he allegedly told officers as he approached them.

One of the officers then tasered the man, and the others took him into custody. He has since been identified as Laotis Buckley — a 48-year-old from Rantoul, Ill.

Buckley was charged with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, one count of aggravated assault, and seven counts of resisting a peace officer. His bond hearing was set for Monday in the Bridgeview Courthouse.
