CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dogs, cats, horses and even a couple guinea pigs were blessed Sunday at a special church service in the South Loop.

The blessing of the animals is a tradition ubiquitous across most religions to celebrate how human lives are enriched by animals.

Rev. Amity Carrubba of Grace Place Episcopal Church said animals make us more human.

“Our pets keep us humble. Our pets make us more connected to God’s creation and less isolated. And, I think our pets and our animals can just expand our awareness beyond ourselves,” Carrubba told WBBM Newsradio.

The Grace Place Episcopal Church and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church partnered to host the blessing in Printers Row Park.

In Christian tradition, the blessing is held annually at the beginning of October to line up with the Feast of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals.
