DOWNER'S GROVE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Downers Grove police have been keeping a close eye on the public library following threats over a planned drag-themed bingo night for teenagers next month.

Downers Grove police said the threats include a social media post urging people to “bring weapons” to the library.

Someone posted a video on the library’s Facebook page of a drag queen questioning events exposing this lifestyle to children.

"What in the hell has a drag queen ever done to make you have so much respect for them and admire them so much,? the person said. That video prompted a number of critical comments.

Library director Julie Milavec wrote a lengthy letter to the community in response as well as answers to frequently asked questions about the event.

"Our goal is to provide a safe and accepting environment for everyone in our community, no matter their age, religion, political party, or identity. Diverse programs, such as Drag Queen Bingo, help everyone see people who are different being accepted and celebrated," stated the letter.

Milavec acknowledged that the program might not be for everyone, but made it clear that library staff do not intend to introduce sexual content to children with this event, which is a concern for some.
