CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The 17th annual Cycle Across Illinois honoring fallen police officers has rolled through the Chicago area.

About 75 police officers and relatives of fallen officers started biking in Alton near St. Louis on Thursday.

Terry Roderick, past president of the Illinois chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, or C.O.P.S., told WBBM Newsradio this ride is honoring officers who died recently and some from years ago.

“We didn’t get to do our ride last year because of COVID. We got a lot of officers who died in the line of duty in 2019 and 2020, so we’ve got a lot of dedications for families,” Roderick said.

At the Glenview police station, Phil Masterton thanked the crowd for remembering his brother who died of a heart attack during role call in December 2014.

“May he be remembered on and the incredible man that he was and still is in our hearts. It’s phenomenal to see all of you, all of this effort,” Masterton said.

The charity ride ended at the Gold Star families memorial at Chicago’s lakefront.
