Fourteen people were shot, including three children, Monday night in East Garfield Park on the West Side, Chicago police said.
The children’s ages are 3, 11 and 13, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown told reporters. All three children are in serious condition.
The other victims ranged in age from 31 to 56, police said.
The shooting occurred as people gathered about 9 p.m. on the 800 block of South California Avenue., police said. People had gathered near the intersection of California and Polk for a vigil unrelated to the incident, police said.
All the victims were taken to various hospitals with injuries ranging from critical condition to not-life-threatening, police said. A 37-year-old man and 48-year-old man were in critical condition after being shot in the torso and head, respectively. The largest number of wounded were taken to Stroger Hospital.
A woman was struck by a car when trying to escape the shooting, police said. She is in fair condition with scrapes on her body.
“We know it’s a drive-by. We know it happened in just a few seconds,” Brown said, adding that the shooter aimed randomly into the crowd, which consisted of some dressed in Halloween costumes. “We do not have any motive,” he said.
He said officers believe there were two shooters.
In earlier versions of this story, the address of the shooting was given as the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street, which was later corrected by Chicago police.
No one was in custody as police remained at the scene more than two hours later.
