CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The death of a pedestrian on the Dan Ryan Expressway led to a nearly seven-hour closure Friday morning.
The accident occurred at around 5:10 a.m. in the local lanes of the Outbound Dan Ryan near 28th Street. According to Illinois State Police, a driver of a Jeep Wrangler, for unknown reasons, fell out of the car and onto the road. Subsequently, two cars hit the person, one of them fled the scene.
The Jeep, without a driver, then veered off the road to the left and struck a concrete wall.
The pedestrian died at the scene. The ISP reported no other injuries.
The outbound local lanes were immediately shut down at 31st street, as law enforcement began their investigation. They remained closed for over six hours, diverting all traffic into the express lanes, and resulting in terrible congestion.
The local lanes reopened at 11:55 a.m.
